Building a World-Class Team When You're a Team of One

Building a World-Class Team When You're a Team of One

When you hear the words world-class team, you might picture a large company with offices full of employees.

But you don't need a large company to have a great team.

When you're building an online business, you may start out as a team of one.

That doesn't mean you have to do everything yourself.

Your Tools Can Become Part of Your Team

Think about the different jobs involved in building a list.

Someone needs to bring visitors to your offer.

Someone needs to provide the capture page.

Someone needs to collect the email address.

Someone needs to deliver the free gift.

Someone needs to send the follow-up emails.

You could try to do all of those things manually.

Or you can put tools to work for you.

Your autoresponder can handle your email sequence.

Your capture page builder can handle your signup page.

Your traffic sources can help bring visitors.

Each one has a job.

Together, they become part of your system.

Choose People and Tools for the Job

A world-class team isn't made up of people who are good at everything.

It's made up of people who are good at their particular job.

The same is true with the tools you choose.

You don't need the most expensive tool.

You don't need the tool with the longest list of features.

You need the tool that does the job you need it to do.

That's an important distinction.

Don't Build a Team Just to Have a Team

It's easy to collect tools.

You join one service because someone recommends it.

Then another catches your attention.

Before long, you have accounts everywhere and aren't using half of them.

That's not a team.

That's clutter.

Every member of your team should have a purpose.

If something isn't helping you reach your goal, ask yourself whether you really need it.

Learn to Work With Your Team

Even the best tools won't help much if you don't learn how to use them.

You don't have to master every feature.

Learn the features that matter to your system.

Get comfortable with them.

Then use them.

That's one reason I prefer simple tools. When something is easy to understand, I'm much more likely to actually use it.

Your Team Can Grow

As your business grows, your team may change.

You might eventually hire someone to help with a task you don't enjoy.

You might find a better service.

You might replace one tool with another.

That's okay.

A good team isn't something you build once and never change.

It's something you improve as you learn.

Final Thoughts

You may be a team of one today.

That's okay.

You don't need a building full of employees to build something worthwhile.

Start with a clear goal.

Choose tools that have a purpose.

Learn to use them well.

And as your needs change, let your team change with you.

A world-class team isn't necessarily the biggest team.

It's the right team doing the right jobs.
